Other Organizations: The LCBP works in partnership with government agencies from New York, Vermont, and Quebec, private organizations, local communities, and individuals to coordinate and fund efforts which benefit the Lake Champlain Basin's water quality, fisheries, wetlands, wildlife, recreation, and cultural resources. Local Motion is a greater Burlington non-profit organization promoting cycling, blading and walking and the trails, bikeways, and sidewalks that make such travel safe, easy and fun! Based on an idea that originated with Vélo Québec, the Route verte has been under development since 1995, with the collaboration of the Québec ministry
of transportation as well as numerous regional partners. linking the various regions of Québec. A powerful catalyst for the development of cycling, the Route verte carries on a tradition that has led to development of the world’s greatest cycling routes. To engage all Americans in marking the new millennium in ways that would leave a lasting legacy, President Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton created the White House Millennium Council to organize a number of national millennium projects. The millennium projects spurred by this effort were guided by the unifying theme to "Honor the Past - Imagine the Future." Millennium Trails was a partnership between the White House Millennium Council, U.S. Department of Transportation and Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in cooperation with other agencies and organizations. As one of the national millennium projects, Millennium Trails recognized, promoted and supported trails as a means to preserve open spaces, interpret history and culture and enhance recreation and tourism. Under this initiative, more than 2,000 trails across America were be recognized, enhanced or built. These included hiking trails, bicycle paths, greenways and scenic byways through rural and urban landscapes and cultural and heritage trails that preserve and commemorate major events in our nation's history.
